President Joe Biden announced that Iran has released five detained American citizens to the country in exchange for thousands of Iranian prisoners and millions of dollars that are being held in South Korea.
The President also warned Americans to stay away from Iran and demanded a “full account” of what happened to Bob Levinson, an American who was last seen there as well.
President Biden held an emotional phone call with the families of the Americans who had recently come home, according to the White House.
US officials stated that some ex-offenders were imprisoned for years on fictitious charges, such as espionage. Republicans were harshly critical of the arrangement because they believed it would allow Iran to kidnap more individuals and would be seen as paying Tehran a ransom.
The White House emphasized that it had to make difficult choices in order to send American individuals back to their country and warned others to stay out of the Islamic Republic’s trap going forward.
Antony Blinken, a representative of the State Department, also issued a similar warning. Despite the fact that these Americans have now been freed, the US government continues to strongly advise against visiting Iran, and any prospective visitors do so at their own risk.
The President also stated that he will look into the whereabouts of Levinson, an ex-FBI agent who went missing in Kish Island, Iran, under mysterious circumstances and is now believed to have passed away after being held captive for many years.
Shahab Dalili, a citizen of the United States, was detained in Iran in 2016 while attending the funeral of his father. Bring Our Families Home demanded President Biden to look into the matter and asked him to engage in negotiations in order to get everyone home.
Iran receives $6 billion from the prisoner deal.
US officials are sure that a wider diplomatic accord was not made possible by the prisoner swap and the warming of financial ties with Iran. Washington and Tehran are at odds due to Iran’s nuclear program, its backing of anti-American groups in the region, its hostility toward Israel, and the United States’ ongoing economic sanctions.
