Republican House Speaker Kevin McCarthy warns that a government shutdown could thwart the GOP’s plans to impeach President Joe Biden.
During an interview on Fox News’ “Sunday Morning Futures,” McCarthy alluded to the fact that preventing a government shutdown is key to keeping the investigation into Biden afloat.
“If we shut down, all government shuts down — investigation and everything else — it hurts the American public. But if we’re able to pass our appropriation bills, we’re in a stronger position to remove those [former Speaker Nancy] Pelosi policies that are locked into law,” he said.
McCarthy has discussed starting an impeachment investigation into Biden, as an impeachment inquiry can be viewed as a preceding step to a formal impeachment.
All of this, however, depends on Congress passing a budget before the deadline in September. Should Congress fail to fund the government, a government shutdown will occur beginning in October.
The Republican leader also highlighted the growing concern around the Biden family’s shady business dealings.
“We did not know of all these times the president lied to the American public,” McCarthy said. “I’ve had Democrats now tell me, they’re very concerned because they back this president based upon what he told America. And with each turn, we find that was not true.”
In response to the allegations, White House spokesman Ian Sams said that the direct evidence, which is on First Son Hunter Biden’s infamous laptop and the paper trail found by House Oversight Chair James Comer, simply equates to a “honspiracy hole” led by Republicans.
“There’s no low they won’t stoop to to push falsehoods about POTUS,” Sams wrote on the social media platform X.
Despite calls for Republican lawmakers to impeach Biden, experts claim that such an investigation would just help him in his re-election campaign next year.
During Monday’s “Inside Politics” on CNN, political director for the network David Chalian said that a thorough impeachment investigation into Biden could actually “juice” his chances to win the 2024 presidential election.
“If one of the big potential vulnerabilities of a Biden re-election effort is an enthusiasm problem, we’re seeing that in small donors. If you want to know how to juice enthusiasm on the Democratic side? Launch an impeachment inquiry and launch impeachment, and watch what that will do to help rally Democrats to Biden’s cause,” said CNN political director David Chalian.
