The body discovered in Brooklyn’s Newtown Creek last Monday has been identified as John Castic, a missing 27-year-old Goldman Sachs analyst, according to ABC News.
Castic had gone missing in the early hours of Saturday, July 29, after attending a Zeds Dead concert at the Brooklyn Mirage the previous evening with a friend.
Concerned friends formed a search party to scour the area around the Mirage and distributed missing person flyers in hopes of finding Castic.
New York City Council member Jen Gutierrez, who represents the Williamsburg section of Brooklyn, posted the missing person flyer on Twitter on Monday.
According to the New York City Police Department, Castic’s body was found in Newtown Creek, located in the East Williamsburg neighborhood of Brooklyn, around 11:00 am on Monday. The discovery was prompted by a 911 call reporting a body floating in the water.
Responding to the call, an NYPD Harbor Unit was dispatched to the scene and recovered Castic’s body from the water. He was pronounced dead at the scene, as confirmed by the NYPD.
Goldman Sachs CEO David Solomon issued a statement expressing condolences over Castic’s passing. Solomon highlighted that Castic worked as part of the bank’s Controllers team, closely collaborating with the Asset and Wealth Management business. He added that the firm was “shocked and saddened” by the tragic loss and extended sympathies to Castic’s family.
Originally from Illinois, John Castic graduated from DePaul University in Chicago before joining Goldman Sachs in August 2022.
“We are all shocked and saddened to learn of John’s tragic passing,” Goldman Sachs CEO and Chairman David Solomon said.
“John was a dedicated, driven member of our Controllers team working closely with our Asset and Wealth Management business. Our thoughts are with his mother Dawn, his father Jeff, and his entire family at this very difficult time. John will be deeply missed by his Goldman Sachs family.” Sachs added.
The medical examiner is set to perform an autopsy to determine the cause of death.
The New York Post reported that Castic is the second person in recent weeks to go missing after attending a concert at the Brooklyn Mirage.
In June, 27-year-old Karl Clemente, who had allegedly been turned away from the Mirage for consuming alcohol, was found deceased behind a warehouse near Newtown Creek. Authorities did not consider his death to be suspicious.
