Tembu Ebere, a self-proclaimed comedian operating under the alias @237_towncryer, embarked on an emotional endeavor in a bid to break the Guinness World Record for continuous crying.
Displaying his tearful journey on TikTok, Ebere’s emotional marathon lasted for an astounding two hours and seven minutes, garnering 5.3 million views.
However, the BBC reported that this relentless crying took a toll on his health, causing headaches, puffy eyes, and a bloated face. The extreme emotional strain even led to a distressing incident of temporary blindness lasting 45 minutes.
Despite the attention his record-breaking effort received on social media, it was revealed that Ebere had not formally submitted an application to Guinness World Records for official recognition.
While his crying marathon captivated the online audience, the lack of an official application prevented his feat from being officially acknowledged.
Nigeria has witnessed an increase in record-breaking attempts following public interest in a chef’s four-day cooking marathon.
Hilda Baci’s attempt to cook non-stop for 100 hours generated widespread support and temporarily crashed the Guinness World Records website for two days. Inspired by her success, others embarked on various challenges, including kiss-a-thons, sing-a-thons, and pray-a-thons.
In an effort to promote a reading culture in Nigeria, John Obot, a teacher, has announced his intention to attempt reading aloud for 140 hours from September 2023 onwards. These extraordinary pursuits have caught the public’s imagination, providing individuals with platforms to showcase their unique abilities and push their physical limits.
However, not all record-breaking attempts have been met with success. Authorities in Ekiti state intervened and prohibited a planned kiss-a-thon world record attempt, threatening the organizers with legal consequences if they proceeded.
Similarly, a masseuse participating in a 72-hour massage-a-thon suffered exhaustion, falling during a live broadcast after completing 53 hours.
Guinness World Records has called on aspiring record-breakers to take necessary precautions and work closely with the organization to ensure their attempts are safe and properly recognized.
Despite criticisms, the organization remains open to record applications from around the world, encouraging individuals to pursue their extraordinary feats responsibly.
While these feats of endurance and unusual challenges may captivate and inspire, it is crucial to prioritize health and safety above all else. Record-breaking attempts should be undertaken with caution and consideration for the physical and mental well-being of the participants.
