Democratic California Rep. Ro Khanna ate his own words after trying to defend First Son Hunter Biden’s federal investigation.
During an interview on ABC News, anchor Jonathan Karl asked Khanna about the testimonies of the two whistleblowers from the Internal Revenue Service (IRS) in Hunter’s alleged tax crimes.
“Are you concerned about what’s coming out of this case?” Karl asked during the network’s “This Week with George Stephanopoulos” on Sunday.
To which the congressman responded, “Jon, no, let’s just review the facts here. You had President Trump appoint a U.S. attorney in Delaware and President Biden had the ability to fire that U.S. attorney if he wanted — as is customary, that a new president comes in, they remove all the U.S. attorneys. President Biden didn’t fire the U.S. attorney. He had his past opponent’s appointee have total power over making a decision —”
“But sir, what the whistleblower’s saying is that Weiss, who was appointed by Trump, was not the deciding official on this case. If that turns out to be true, doesn’t that directly contradict what the attorney general has said?” Karl interrupted.
“But Weiss is not saying that. Isn’t the source Weiss? If Weiss was saying that, I would have a concern. If Weiss was out there saying, ‘I didn’t have total authority, there was interference.’ But Weiss is the key person, and he’s not saying that,” the California Democrat rebutted.
This comes after the Justice Department recently announced that it was ending its investigation into Hunter without bringing any charges, and despite staggering evidence of his involvement in the Biden family’s shady business dealings.
Republican House Speaker Kevin McCarthy, however, said that Hunter’s “sweetheart deal” will not stop and might even “enhance” the GOP’s probe of his business dealings.
“How can Hunter Biden plead guilty, no jail time, and the DOJ say there’s still an investigation trying to withhold information to the House?” McCarthy asked. “That’s unacceptable and will not stand.”
“Now, this does nothing to our investigation, and it actually should enhance our investigation because the DOJ should not be able to withhold any information now, saying that there’s a pending investigation,” he continued.
