Democratic Milwaukee Circuit Court Judge Janet Protasiewicz reportedly used the “N” word when referring to Black people in court cases.
This comes as Janet Protasiewicz faces off against conservative former Supreme Court Justice Daniel Kelly in the election on April 4, which will determine the majority on the Wisconsin Supreme Court.

According to Wisconsin Right Now, Protasiewicz used the “N” word to describe black people who were accused of crimes.
“Two people who knew Janet Protasiewicz – her former stepson AND a long-time self-described liberal family friend of her ex-husband – told Wisconsin Right Now in recorded interviews that they heard Protasiewicz use racial slurs when she was a prosecutor in Children’s Court. Both men, Jonathan Ehr and Michael Madden, told Wisconsin Right Now that they personally heard Protasiewicz use the “N word” to refer to blacks,” the news outlet reported.
Madden, Protasiewicz’s then-stepson, said that she often used the “N word” during her time as a prosecutor in Milwaukee County Children’s Court.
“I think it was the “N word” and then I thought she said, I could have sworn she said, beaner, or something, beaner,” he said.
The recordings are available to listen to on Wisconsin Right Now’s website. Both men claimed to have overheard her using the racial obscenities when Protasiewicz was married to conservative Milwaukee County Judge Patrick Madden in 1997. At the time, she was a 34-year-old assistant district attorney for Milwaukee County.
The former stepson also said he heard Protasiewicz use racial slurs in such conversations at their family’s dining room table. Asked which slur, he said, “I don’t really want to say it. It’s the one that everyone knows.”
When asked how many times she said the “N” word, Madden said: “There were some discussions about, you know, the drug wars and things like that and the type of criminal behavior that was going on in certain parts of the city.”
“She used a descriptive word for African-Americans,” he added. “It’s something an educated and decent person wouldn’t use. The same letter that nose starts with.”
Reporters have reached out to Protasiewicz for comment, but she did not immediately return the request.
