The US Department of Energy is set to announce on Tuesday that the National Lab Scientists have made a breakthrough on energy fusion.

The authorities revealed that this fusion will power the stars and the sun that reportedly would produce a cheap source of energy.

Fusion will work when the two atoms’ nuclei are subjected to extreme heat of 180 million Fahrenheit (100 million degrees Celsius) or higher. This will lead them to fuse into a new larger atom which produces huge amounts of energy.

However, the process of fusion will consume an enormous amount of energy and the trick used by Scientists is to make the process self-sustaining and receive more energy out than what goes in.

According to the sources with knowledge of the matter, for the first time, the scientists at Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory in California have already attained its goal to achieve a net energy gain in a fusion experiment using lasers.

In an exclusive report released by Reuters, one of the sources revealed that “while the results are a milestone in a scientific quest that has been developing since at least the 1930s, the ratio of energy going into the reaction at Livermore to getting energy out of it needs to be about 100 times bigger to create a process producing commercial amounts of electricity.”

The report also added that “if fusion is commercialized, which backers say could happen in a decade or more, it would have additional benefits including the generation of virtually carbon-free electricity which could help in the fight against climate change without the amounts of radioactive nuclear waste produced by today’s fission reactors.”

On Tuesday, Department of Energy Secretary Jennifer Granholm is expected to hold a press conference on Tuesday at 10:00 a.m. EST (1500 GMT) for a “major scientific breakthrough.”

However, when asked about the details of the said briefing, the spokesperson revealed that the department had information to release ahead of the conference.

Furthermore, Reuters revealed that the “fusion experiment could lead to testing safer testing of the nation’s arsenal of such bombs” and that the “advances at the labs could also help efforts at companies that hope to develop power plants fired by fusion including Commonwealth Fusion Systems, Focused Energy and General Fusion”

Jeff Bezos, Bill Gates and John Doerr were among the investors who spent money into companies that build fusion.

According to the Fusion Industry Association, the private industry has already secured more than $2.8 billion last year.
