China is imposing sanctions against the United States in response to US House Speaker Nancy Pelosi’s reckless visit to Taiwan last week.
According to the local reports in China, the furious Chinese leaders will cut communications with the United States on several international issues such as anti-drug trafficking systems, climate change and military issues direct consequence to Pelosi’s arrival in Taiwan despite the Pentagon’s warnings and China’s threats.
Just this weekend, China’s Foreign Ministry spokesman released a statement on state news station CCTV, announcing the sanctions against the House Speaker and her family.
“In disregard of China’s grave concerns and firm opposition, Speaker of the US House of Representatives Nancy Pelosi insisted on visiting China’s Taiwan region. This constitutes gross interference in China’s internal affairs,” the spokesman said.
“It gravely undermines China’s sovereignty and territorial integrity, seriously tramples on the one-China principle, and severely threatens peace and stability across the Taiwan Strait,” the statement added.
Prior to Pelosi’s visit, the House Speaker announced his plans to travel to Taiwan, prompting China and the US Pentagon to issue numerous warnings.
However, despite the threats and warnings, Pelosi touched down on the island in Air Force One on Tuesday.
Shortly after her arrival, Pelosi posted her op-ed through the Washington Post.
“Today, America must remember that vow. We must stand by Taiwan, which is an island of resilience. In recent years, Beijing has dramatically intensified tensions with Taiwan. The People’s Republic of China (PRC) has ramped up patrols of bombers, fighter jets and surveillance aircraft near and even over Taiwan’s air defense zone, leading the U.S. Defense Department to conclude that China’s army is ‘likely preparing for a contingency to unify Taiwan with the PRC by force.’” Pelosi wrote.
“The PRC has also taken the fight into cyberspace, launching scores of attacks on Taiwan government agencies each day. At the same time, Beijing is squeezing Taiwan economically, pressuring global corporations to cut ties with the island, intimidating countries that cooperate with Taiwan, and clamping down on tourism from the PRC,” Pelosi added.
“In the face of the Chinese Communist Party’s (CCP) accelerating aggression, our congressional delegation’s visit should be seen as an unequivocal statement that America stands with Taiwan, our democratic partner, as it defends itself and its freedom.” The speaker continued.
After that, Beijing launched military drills across Taiwan including targeted missile launches after Pelosi’s diplomatic visit to the island nation escalated tensions between Taiwan and China.
“In response to Pelosi’s egregious provocation, China decides to adopt sanctions on Pelosi and her immediate family members in accordance with relevant laws of the People’s Republic of China,” added the spokesman.
