A family in Florida reveals that the campaign for electric vehicles in saving the planet and consumers’ money over time is not always true.
17-year old Avery Siwinski who is currently residing in Petersburg was fond of her electric Ford Focus until it stopped working.
According to Siwinski, her parents had spent $11,000 on the used 2014 vehicle, with 60,000 miles on the odometer and described it as “small and quiet and cute.”
However, just 6 months after her parents purchased the electric car, it suddenly stopped working.
“In March, it started giving an alert. And then we took it to the shop and it stopped running.” Siwinski claimed.
Siwinski also revealed that the mechanics told her that the car just needed a new battery. However, when she went to purchase one, a local Ford dealership revealed that replacing the battery will cost her $14,000 and offered her $500 for the vehicle.
She also added that the total cost for the battery doesn’t even include the labor costs.
However, Siwinski’s grandfather, Ray Siwinski revealed that the story got worse upon learning that the battery replacement costs more than the car itself.
Ray also claimed that the owners of the electric Ford Focus cannot even buy replacement batteries for the vehicle and revealed that the company had already discontinued the production of the vehicle several years ago.
“Then we found out the batteries were not even available. So it didn’t matter. They could cost twice as much and we still couldn’t get it.” Ray said.
The controversial story against electric cars came as US President Joe Biden’s administration continues to push for electric vehicles over gas-powered cars.
Just last week, Transportation Secretary Pete Buttigieg announced that “we’re for cutting the cost of electric vehicles because when you have an electric vehicle then you’re also gonna be able to save on gas, but you’ve got to be able to afford it in the first place.”
“Now we’re actually starting to see on some models the cost come to where, even if your car payment’s a little higher, your gas payment will be a little lower and you come out ahead. But the prices still need to come down for most Americans to be able to get an EV.” He added.
Moreover, as of June this year, the average price for electric cars nearly reached $67,000 and majority of the Americans are having a hard time transitioning from gas-powered cars to electric vehicles due to the soaring inflation, increasing the prices for oil, food and other commodities.
