US First lady Jill Biden sparked public outrage and was mocked after she compared Hispanics to Tacos in a Texas conference this week.
In a speech she made as a keynote speaker during the recent “Latinx Incluxion” conference at the Grand Hyatt Riverwalk in San Antonio, Texas, on Monday, the first lady was talking about Hispanics when she mispronounced “bodegas” as “bogedas.”
It also got worse when Biden then compared the Hispanic community to breakfast tacos as she went on.
“The diversity of this community as distinct at the bogedas of the Bronx, as beautiful as the blossoms of Miami, and as unique as the breakfast tacos here in San Antonio, is your strength!” Jill Biden said.
Although the audience laughed at her misstatement, netizens blasted the first lady on social media over her bizarre comparison.
“Can this sorry BIDEN administration be more tone deaf and insensitive with the Hispanic American community? Pitiful,” activist Fernando Amandi said in response to Jill’s speech.
Rep. Dan Crenshaw also blasted the first lady and said, “if Jill Biden is going to compare Hispanic Americans to breakfast tacos then she could at least use more inclusive language: It’s ‘TacX,’ Jill.”
Amid the criticisms against her controversial statement, the National Association of Hispanic Journalists ripped the first lady and said, “we are not tacos. Our heritage as Latinos is shaped by various diasporas, cultures and food traditions. Do not reduce us to stereotypes.”
Texas Governor Greg Abbott also slammed Biden in a tweet saying, “Breakfast tacos? This is why Texas Hispanics are turning away from the Democratic party.”
After Jill Biden’s controversial remarks in a speech to the civil rights and advocacy organization UnidosUS, her office released a public apology through her press secretary.
“The first lady apologizes that her words conveyed anything but pure admiration and love for the Latino community.” Biden’s press secretary, Michael LaRosa, responded.
Jill Biden’s remarks were made a day before US President Joe Biden gathered with Mexican President Andrés Manuel López Obrador at the White House to reportedly discuss the record-breaking migration crisis in the hemisphere and high inflation in both countries.
