House Republicans called for US President Joe Biden to withdraw from the World Health Organization (WHO) amid controversies involving allegiance to communist China.
According to the reports, House Republicans led by Wisconsin Rep. Tom Tiffany demanded in a letter addressing the president to withdraw amid controversies linking China to the origin of Covid-19.
Tiffany also cited in the letter “lack of reforms to the organization and allegiance to Communist and authoritarian regimes” and demanded more documents that will detail the communication between WHO and the International Health Regulations (IHR).
According to the reports, the Republicans fear that the IHR will “interfere with American sovereignty on health matters.”
The GOP also pointed out how China and Russia were members of WHO but Taiwan is not.
“The WHO is a corrupt, wholly-owned subsidiary of Communist China. Giving this unaccountable bureaucracy even more power after the incompetence of the last two years is like hiring the arsonist who started the fire to help you put it out.” Tiffany said in a statement.
The letter came out after Biden declared his interest to defer to WHO for policies to govern future pandemics.
RSC National Security & Foreign Affairs Task Force Chairman Joe Wilson and RSC Budget and Spending Task Force Chairman Kevin Hern also reportedly parties to the letter.
Previously, former US President Donald Trump has also withdrawn from the organization. Reports revealed that Trump grew frustrated because of the organization’s allegiances to Russia and China.
“We will be terminating our relationship with the World Health Organization and directing those funds” to other global public health charities. The world is now suffering as a result of the malfeasance of the Chinese government,” Trump claimed, adding that China had “instigated a global pandemic.”
The former president also accused China of pressurising the organization so it would “mislead the world” about COVID-19.
“China has total control over the World Health
Organization,” Trump claimed.
Trump’s withdrawal came out after Covid-19 hit the country and eventually spread globally in 2020.
Although several governments and experts from different countries accused China of it, the WHO still refused to condemn China and refused to admit that the virus likely escaped from a Chinese lab in Wuhan, where the virus originated.
