Republican presidential candidate Chris Christie says that former President Donald Trump will be convicted in one of his legal cases.
During an interview on MSNBC’s “Morning Joe,” Christie claims that “it’s over” for Trump after former White House chief of staff Mark Meadows was granted an immunity deal for the former president’s 2020 election interference.
“This is a guy who was Velcro to Trump’s hip for the entire 2020 campaign and all the post-campaign nonsense,” Christie said of Meadows. “And so this is deadly, it’s done. He’s going to be convicted. It’s over.”
“I want Republican voters to understand this — what’s going to be happening in March? He’s going to be sitting in a courtroom in Washington, D.C., with Mark Meadows 20 feet away from him, saying, ‘He committed crimes in front of me on my watch,’” the former New Jersey governor added.
Christie, who is running in the GOP presidential race with only 3 percent support, has mostly used his campaign to attack Trump. He also thinks that Trump cannot delay his legal battles, despite his presidential campaign.
“I don’t have the impression that this district court judge in Washington is amenable to delay,” Christie said, in reference to Trump’s separate federal charges over his alleged involvement in the January 6 riots.
Christie previously ran for the Republican nomination in 2016, but after a lackluster performance in New Hampshire, he withdrew from the campaign very early. He was also one of the first ex-candidates to support Trump after withdrawing from the race.
Despite the New Jersey Republican’s smear campaign, Trump is still leading in several polls across the country. According to The Economist and YouGov’s recent survey, 51 percent are in favor of the 45th president, while Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis comes in second with 14 percent.
Around 1,500 U.S. adult citizens between August 26 and 29 were asked who they would vote for if “the Republican presidential primary in your state were held today.”
Entrepreneur Vivek Ramaswamy comes in a distant third with five percent. Former South Carolina Gov. Nikki Haley comes in fourth with four percent, followed by former Vice President Mike Pence with three percent, Christie with two percent, and South Carolina Sen. Tim Scott with two percent.
