NYC Mayor Announces Changes to Combat Crime

New York City Mayor Eric Adams announces the city’s new plan to combat crime and tells the public to expect an anti-crime group known as “Neighborhood Safety Teams” to return.

Amid the increasing crime rates in the city with multiple New York City police officers who have lost their lives in the line of duty and civilians being attacked and in the streets randomly by unprovoked perpetrators, it’s clear that the local government needs to make some changes in the city.

When Adams was still a candidate, he promised to get rid of the crime in the city.

In 2020, the Neighborhood Safety Teams were dissolved following George Floyd’s death. But now, Adams is planning to bring back the anti-crime group again.

However, there are changes to be made this time. Unlike last time where the group was operational and police officers did not wear uniforms, now police officers who will be joining the team will have to wear their uniforms accordingly, rather than plain clothing.

Moreover, another challenge that the mayor is currently facing is that he has yet to rehire the police officers who lost their jobs earlier this year over COVID vaccine mandate.

As of now, Adams hasn’t spoken about this and no plans, indicating that the police officers who were fired over the vaccine mandate would be rehired. During his previous statement regarding this matter, he claimed that the police officers “voluntarily forfeiting their jobs by refusing to follow the city’s vaccination mandate.”

Citizens also argue that if Adams really wanted to prioritize “bringing law and order back to his community,” having as many “capable police officers working as possible should be considered as well.”
