Long-term shelters for migrants are being closed in New York City

People who were living in long-term facilities in New York City have been kicked out to make room for what they’re calling a “summer surge” of illegal aliens.

The Department of Homeless Services has been telling family shelters how to tell refugees with little time to spare to pack up all of their things. The city even sent Win, the biggest family shelter, a list of refugees they wanted to get rid of right away. The shelter said they couldn’t say no to the orders.

Win said in a statement, “Win is strongly against shelter transfers. This is an unfair and cruel policy that the Department of Homeless Services needs to end right away.” Evictions from shelters make things less stable for families, especially kids, who are trying to finish the school year in the places they know and trust.

Christine Quinn, Win’s CEO, said, “The city expressed said it wanted to have units specifically for migrants,” Quinn said, “and were planning for a summer surge in arrivals, so it needed to create vacancies in certain shelters.”

Quinn also said that they expect more requests to be removed and that she “doesn’t see this stopping.” “I think they’ll come back to us with other people,” she said.

Neha Sharma, a spokeswoman for DHS, wants the federal government to give them money so they can get these migrants out of the country properly.

A woman from Columbia called Deicy Lara said she had been in the shelter for two years before she was told she had only twenty-four hours to leave. “They called me and told me that today at 4 p.m.,” Lara said. Everyone would have to leave their stuff outside because I was going to a hotel.
