The Chief Technology Officer of Ceres Power has talked about how using artificial intelligence could use a lot of energy as it becomes more popular.

The CTO of Ceres Power, Caroline Hargrove, said, “What scares me is how much energy you use if you just use ChatGPT for simple queries.” A report from the International Energy Agency said that a Google search uses about 0.3 watt-hours of power, while a ChatGPT request uses about 2.9 watt-hours.

Just to give you an idea, they said that if nine billion searches happen every day, it would add up to ten terawatt-hours of power every year. According to the study, the “AI industry is expected to have grown exponentially to consume at least ten times its own electricity demand in 2023.”

It was said that if usage is not properly limited, this could lead to a lot of energy being used. If too many people use this situation too often, it can become a problem if it’s not managed properly. A lot of people think it will make things more efficient and better.

To look into the risks that AI could bring when it comes to climate change, the Climate Action Against Disinformation Coalition was made public. After looking into the results, the coalition said that businesses should be open about how much energy and pollution their AI models use.

They also said that companies should be punished if they don’t follow this and don’t report or regulate their AI models.
