A new government bulletin says that police are already getting ready to try to protect the nominating conventions from possible threats during the next election.
People who want to attack or cause trouble will be able to do so at these Republican and Democratic events. The police are afraid that attackers will make someone look bad or attack them in front of other people or on TV.
A report from the Department of Homeland Security listed different possible threats. This way, police can be ready for these events and deal with any problems that come up, as well as see if any threats are getting stronger.
The DHS bulletin said, “Terrorists from both nation-states and non-states may see these events as a chance to use hostile or violent disruption tactics on a national media stage to try to change or stop the U.S. political process.”
Since these conventions are well known and are shown on TV, threats could come from anything, such as a cyberattack, a physical attack, or a plan to cause trouble at these events.
Assistant Secretary for DHS Elizabeth Neumann said, “The world we live in now is like a tinderbox—you never know which match will land and start a fire.” There is a threat, but we don’t know where it will come from or who will do it. It could be a parade celebrating the Super Bowl or a big political convention. We need to be ready for anything that might happen.
A lot of experts say that the way people are getting ready for a threat during this election is different from any other because the chance of a threat is so much higher because of how tense things are during this election. As the number of possible threats grows, they have started getting ready for any kind. This is because cyber threats and other technology threats are now being shown at televised and aired events.
